The police chief of the northern Iraqi city of Mosul was killed in a suicide bomb attack on Thursday as he toured the scene of a blast a day earlier in which at least 20 people died. Rescuers were still digging through the rubble of Wednesday’s explosion when an attacker in a police uniform blew himself up.

A Russian university has bought one of the world’s most powerful supercomputers, the first time that such sophisticated technology has been exported to the former Soviet Union, makers IBM said on Thursday. The Moscow State University has selected a Blue Gene device capable of 27,8-trillion operations per second to use in research on nanotechnology.

Bargain hunting among global equity markets underpinned a solid performance on the JSE on Thursday, lifting it by 3,3% at noon. By the same time, resources had collected 4,74%, the platinum-mining index advanced 5,1% and the gold-mining index added 1,51%. Industrials perked up 2,25%, financials gained 2,2% and banks were 2,07% higher.

The case against alleged Skielik shooter Johan Nel was postponed in the Swartruggens District Court on Thursday. Nel stands accused of the murder of four people and the attempted murder of six others in a shooting incident in the Skielik informal settlement last Monday. The case was postponed to February 12.

Lonmin, the world’s third-biggest platinum producer, cut its sales outlook for the current year on Thursday after a 19 % fall in first-quarter refined platinum output. The London-listed firm said in a statement it expected 860 000 ounces of refined platinum sales during the year ending September 2008, compared with a previous forecast of 900 000 ounces.

Gazans poured into Egypt for a second consecutive day on Thursday to stock up on supplies after militants blew open the border barrier of the Hamas-run territory, witnesses said. Hundreds of people continued to cross the border, most of them intent on buying goods on the Egyptian side a week after Israel imposed a blockade on territory.

Climate change is occurring far more rapidly than even the worst predictions of the United Nations Nobel Prize-winning Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, Al Gore said on Thursday. Recent evidence shows "the climate crisis is significantly worse and unfolding more rapidly than … projections had warned us", he said.
