For Ashraf Moosa, 25, healthcare isn’t just about treating illness — it’s about designing systems that improve efficiency and create meaningful change. Blending medicine, technology, and entrepreneurship, Ashraf co-founded WiZmed, South Africa’s leading student-run medical supplier, now serving over 50 000 healthcare professionals. From pioneering Africa’s first in-house stethoscope engraving service to developing a purpose-built, affordable diagnostic tool — the WiZmed Stethoscope — Ashraf’s mission is to make healthcare tools more accessible. Working with the Western Cape Department of Health, he has helped digitise surgical scheduling, streamline referrals and design AI-powered tools for patient triage, particularly in multilingual South African settings. During the pandemic, Ashraf also co-founded WiZedu, providing free academic resources to high school learners nationwide. An advocate for scalable solutions, he is driven by a belief that thoughtful technology can radically improve healthcare — especially in resource-limited environments. His philosophy: “Build systems, not just solutions.” Ashraf is a passionate endurance athlete, currently preparing for the Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc.
I admire Dr Imtiaz Sooliman for his unwavering humanitarian impact through Gift of the Givers. Closer to home, my father’s quiet determination and work ethic have profoundly shaped my values. I also draw inspiration from clinician-innovators such as Mohammed Dalwai, the founder of EM Guidance, who build tools to improve healthcare at scale.
