Bradley Max Segal, 28, is merging medical expertise with artificial intelligence to solve complex problems. After completing his medical degree and clinical training at Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital, Segal simultaneously completed a master’s in biomedical engineering. Today, he serves as chief technology officer at Engage Mx, leading efforts to automate population health management. His team’s tools identify patients with chronic diseases who have fallen through the cracks — scaling care outreach. As health AI lead for Phylaxis.ai, Bradley develops systems that integrate medical risk assessment with large language models to detect high-risk patients earlier. At the University of Oxford, where he’s completing his DPhil, his research focuses on novel AI applications for early disease detection. Bradley’s work has already touched thousands of lives, and his influence extends to global platforms. He serves on the editorial board of BMJ Digital Health & AI and contributes to international efforts improving HIV care with AI-driven solutions. Inspired by mentors like Dr Michael Klipin, Segal believes true impact lies beyond rigid pathways. His mission: to build innovative health systems that save lives at scale.
A key point of pride for me came early on with Engage Mx. We switched on a service to identify patients who had stopped following up for chronic treatment and, in the span of a minute, interacted with an order of magnitude more patients than I had in my entire medical career. It cemented the idea that I could have a greater impact on the health system by working on ways to better manage systems of care than I could in a clinic delivering it.
Dr Michael Klipin has been instrumental in shaping my journey. He is an exceptional surgeon and an even better person, who encouraged me to pursue my current path. Medicine is notorious for its rigid specialisation pathways, and I’m certain that my current work would have remained merely a hobby without his encouragement to forge my own way. Michaelhas provided constant support, encouragement and characteristically irreverent humour as I’ve navigated uncharted territory.
