For Joel Cedras, technology has always been more than just code — it is a tool for impact. By Grade 10, he was already tutoring classmates and offering free exam-prep classes to support peers academically. Now 19 and a second-year BSc computer science student at Stellenbosch University, Joel has turned his early drive into purpose-led entrepreneurship. Through his company, joelcedras.dev, he develops IT systems and websites for non-profits and small businesses, helping them grow in a digital world. His services range from coding secure platforms to setting up Google and Microsoft environments. Joel’s values were tested when he helped expose fraud in the Sassa grant system, a move that drew national attention — and threats. “We had to put South Africa first,” he says. He also provides free digital support to organisations such as DR Sports & Development and the Kairos-Lily Foundation, and sponsors websites for emerging entrepreneurs. Mentored by GroundUp founder Nathan Geffen, Joel believes in ethical innovation and giving back. “Knowing my work helps people is what keeps me going,” he says — proving that technology can be a force for justice and change.
