Profile

Liezel Mc Duling, 29, is reshaping early childhood intervention in the Free State through accessible, evidence-based speech-language therapy. As a paediatric therapist in Bethlehem, she supports more than 50 children with developmental conditions including autism, Down syndrome and cerebral palsy. Her work centres on inclusive education, context-sensitive care and empowering families, caregivers and educators with practical communication strategies. Liezel is the creator of Story Detectives — a dynamic programme that strengthens language, early literacy and auditory processing skills, particularly for second- language learners. She also develops language stimulation guides for under-resourced communities and delivers teletherapy to increase access. With a master’s in early childhood intervention from the University of Pretoria, she bridges clinical knowledge with grassroots innovation. Her collaborations with the department of education have advanced autism services and teacher training across the province. Guided by the belief that “pressure is a privilege”, she is transforming the way speech-language services reach South African children.

Mentors

Dr Sadna Balton, head of the department of speech-language therapy and audiology at Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital, is an exceptional advocate for the rights of individuals and families experiencing communication challenges. Her persistence and dedication in leading and organising a range of activities to support these individuals are qualities that continue to inspire me to advocate for children’s rights on a daily basis.
