Thobani Ndlovu, 31, is a creative strategist and built environment innovator who believes that design can transform both spaces and society. Thobani‘s journey began with a fascination for numbers and structure, but evolved into a deep love for architecture, community, and storytelling. Thobani is a creative lead at Lazuza Group, a design-focused firm leading architectural projects — particularly housing developments — with a focus on functionality, community value and aesthetic excellence. He is balancing technical precision with social purpose. Equally impactful is his work as curator of TEDxDurban, where he helps shape one of South Africa’s most respected platforms for ideas and helps local stories reach global audiences. Thobani is a 2024 Hollywoodbets KZN Youth Business Awards winner in the Property category and a 2023 Durban Tourism Business Awards runner-up. He’s also pioneering a digital platform for artisans, empowering informal tradespeople through trust-based systems and tech solutions. Thobani strives to lead with curiosity, empathy, and impact. “Progress is possible,” he says, “and I have a role to play in shaping it—through spaces, stories and the power of design.”
One person I deeply admire is Nozipho Tshabalala. Her ability to hold space for complex, high-stakes conversations with grace, intelligence and empathy has had a powerful impact on how I view leadership and communication. As a global moderator and conversation strategist, she does not just ask questions — she creates environments where ideas can be challenged, truths can emerge and real dialogue can take place. What inspires me most about her is how she combines intellectual rigour with emotional intelligence. She shows that effective leadership is not always about having the loudest voice, but about asking the right questions, listening deeply and guiding others to clarity. Nozipho has influenced my journey by showing me the importance of being both informed and curious — of stepping into rooms not just to speak, but to spark meaningful conversations. Her work reminds me that change often begins with dialogue, and that the way we speak and listen can shape everything from boardrooms to communities. She represents the kind of leader I strive to be: intentional, articulate and deeply connected to purpose.
