Two primary school pupils were wounded in a shoot-out during a botched cash-in-transit heist in Parktown on Friday morning, Gauteng police said.
Lieutenant Colonel Tshisikhawe Ndou said one of the children was shot in the shoulder and the other in the hand when police intercepted a cash-in-transit robbery.
Both pupils, who are girls, were attending Roseneath Primary School for their last day before the upcoming holidays.
He said the robbers had cornered a security company van at the corner of Empire and Queens roads.
They pointed a firearm at the driver. The robber tried to discharge two shots but the gun jammed.
Undercover police who were on patrol came to investigate and a shoot-out ensued, in which the children were shot.
It was unclear whether the police or the robbers shot the children, Ndou said.
The robbers managed to escape and no arrests were made.
Ndou said the guard was carrying an amount of R100 000. — Sapa
