KwaZulu-Natal Attorney General Tim McNally, accused last week of failing to tackle political violence has been called — with peers in the other provinces — to account to Parliament.
Justice committee chairman Johnny de Lange said this week all nine attorneys general will appear before a public hearing — likely to be held early next month — to enforce the accountability procedures outlined in the 1992 Attorney General Act.
The hearing would also give attorneys general an opportunity to talk about problems they experience.

While the Act put the appointment and removal of attorneys general in the hands of the president, “if there are serious issues raised, we could recommend the appointment or removal of such officials.
“At the moment we have nine different autonomous attorneys general, so there are potentially nine different prosecution policies in the country. This is unacceptable, and, to my mind, unconstitutional.”
