Three Gauteng men were arrested on Saturday for firing shots at the funeral in Khuma, North West, of a robber involved in a cash-in-transit heist. The arrests came shortly before President Thabo Mbeki was due to hold an imbizo (meeting), police said.
Superintendent Louis Jacobs said police were on high alert due to the president’s visit and had responded to shots fired at the graveyard at about 11.30am.
The imbizo programme was to start at 12.30pm at the Khuma Stadium, according to an online statement issued by the Presidency.
The three men, aged between 26 and 31, were arrested for discharging firearms in a municipal area. The suspects’ guns were not confiscated. Nobody was injured during the incident.
