From a small village in Limpopo to becoming Vodacom’s AI lab research lead, Khensani Xivuri, 34, is reshaping the future of responsible AI. With a PhD in applied data science — the first awarded by the University of Johannesburg — and three prior degrees from the University of Pretoria, she com- bines academic excellence with a commitment to social impact. At Vodacom, Khensani leads research efforts focused on practical, ethical AI solutions. Her role includes translating innovation into business strategy while embedding fairness, transparency and accountability into emerging technologies. Beyond her corporate work, she is the founder of Dyondzo Ayi Lumi with Dr K, a non-profit that helps underprivileged matriculants apply to university and explore careers in science, technology, engineering and maths. She has led tech governance projects across Africa and in Europe, and co-supervises post- graduates. Khensani calls for equitable digital literacy, ethical tech policies and increased investment in youth innovation ecosystems. Khensani’s journey is proof that compassion, discipline and data can co- exist — and that South Africa’s tech future can be both inclusive and transformational.
One of the most significant milestones is becoming the first person to earn a PhD in applied data science from the University of Johannesburg, an achievement that represents both academic excellence and a breakthrough for underrepresented communities. This accomplishment has become a source of inspiration for young people from similar backgrounds, demonstrating what is possible through dedication and opportunity. Throughout the professional journey, there has been extensive leadership in technology audit, governance and assurance projects across South Africa, the broader African continent and Europe, building expertise through perseverance, humility and hard work. In addition to industry work, there is an ongoing contribution to academia as a co-supervisor at the University of Johannesburg, supporting the next generation of researchers in the evolving fields of data science and technology.
Deep admiration goes to my family and close friends. Their unwavering support, sacrifice and resilience have shaped the journey. They have instilled humility, a spirit of service and an understanding of the power of community — values that remain central to my work and purpose.
