Mentors

My mother, Lydia Gugulethu Mthembu, grew up under extremely harsh conditions but persevered to raise my siblings and me as a single parent. Before qualifying as a nurse, she washed laundry for people in the village of eMalangeni to support her studies. Raised in destitution by my grandmother — who was once a street child during the apartheid era — she went on to create a home filled with love and care.  She has been central to my academic success and to the development of compassion for the world. My mother raised us with prayer, kindness, and love. Her example inspires a commitment to lead with those same values.
