Refuwe Thubela, 26, serves as chief legal officer at Lawyers for the Arts South Africa, providing legal support to creatives. His work includes legal advice, hosting masterclasses, facilitating workshops, building stakeholder partnerships, and driving law clinics that empower artists. A graduate of the Independent Institute of Education, Refuwe holds a BCom Law degree, an LLB, and is an attorney of the High Court of South Africa. His commitment to leadership excellence has seen him earn a professional director SA designation through the Directors Association. He is pursuing a Master of Laws in Corporate Law at Unisa. Among his achievements are his academic excellence as a Golden Key International Honour Society member, becoming an admitted attorney by 26, and serving on his first board as a non-executive director. Beyond his legal career, Refuwe is involved in Junior Chamber International (JCI) Sandton, empowering young leaders to create positive change in their communities. Inspired by his father, Levy Thubela, Refuwe lives by the principle to “run your own race.” His daily motivation stems from a desire to realise his dreams, honour his family’s sacrifices and unlock his highest potential.
My father, Levy Thubela — truly the most amazing man ever encountered. Not only a father, but also a friend, mentor and biggest critic. The young man of today is a direct result of his teachings. He is humble, hardworking, God-fearing, family-orientated, possesses integrity and always maintains a teachable spirit. Through his guidance and presence, valuable lessons were learnt: respect for others, accountability, kindness, compassion and leadership.
