At 21, Khanya Mabandla demonstrates a steadfast commitment to sustainability. A second-year BSc plant and soil sciences student at Stellenbosch University, she focuses on crop protection and breeding, driven by the belief that agriculture can be both innovative and equitable. Khanya’s days are filled with lectures, laboratory work and practical sessions — but her influence extends beyond the classroom. As a wellness mentor, she supports first-year students. She also serves as media and marketing manager for the AgriSciences Student Association, designing content and coordinating student engagement initiatives. Her leadership journey began in Grade 10, when an essay for the American Society of Human Genetics earned her national attention, debate platforms, and broadcast interviews. That moment, made possible by her mother’s encouragement, solidified her voice as a young advocate for education and science. Committed to environmental action, Khanya adopted a Southern Right whale through the Mammal Research Institute and is inspired by the entrepreneurial legacy of her grandfather. “Don’t compare your journey,” she says. “Your path is uniquely yours” — a mantra she lives daily with grace and intent.
I completed Grade R to Grade 7 at Merrifield Preparatory School in East London and moved to the Diocesan School for Girls (DSG) in Makhanda (Grahamstown) for Grades 8 to 12, where I matriculated with A-Levels. I am currently pursuing a BSc in AgriSciences at Stellenbosch University.
In Grade 10, I entered the American Society of Human Genetics Annual Essay Contest. That essay opened doors: I was featured in the local newspaper The Daily Dispatch, invited to the Thabo Mbeki Foundation Annual Youth Debate, and interviewed on Keith Ngesi Radio and SABC True FM. The greatest lesson I learned through that experience was the power of support, particularly from my mother, who encouraged me to enter the contest and advocated for my voice to be heard. Her belief in me made all the difference.
I deeply admire my mother, Bhelekazi Mabandla, whose resilience and dedication continue to inspire me. She has always stood by me, encouraging my goals and growth. I also look up to my grandfather, Phumzile Mabandla, a visionary entrepreneur who founded Thuso Business Consultants. His legacy reminds me of the impact of perseverance and purpose.
