Profile

At just 18, Sandra Louise Smith is already shaping civic life in Nelson Mandela Bay. As the junior mayor for 2024–25, she represents youth voices across the metro,  advocating for inclusive leadership, community engagement, and social upliftment. Sandra’s path to leadership began in the small town of Kirkwood, where values of service and resilience were woven into her upbringing.  Inspired by her mother, a long-time public representative, she embraced servant leadership as a daily practice  — not a position, but a responsibility to elevate others. While completing her final year at Woodridge College, Sandra balances civic duties with academic excellence. She holds multiple honours and serves as a Round Square facilitator and hostel prefect. Recognised as a Young Leaders Awards finalist and recipient of the Headmaster’s Leadership Award, she leads with empathy and initiative. Her commitment extends beyond school walls. Since 2020, she has volunteered with the Omgee Project and Vallei Dierevriende, addressing both food insecurity and animal welfare in under-resourced communities. “You don’t have to be good to start — but you have to start to get good,” she says. Sandra’s journey proves leadership begins with heart — and action.

Qualifications

Currently Grade 12 scholar at Woodridge College. I have achieved academic honors.

Achievements

One of the most significant milestones in my journey so far has been being elected as the Junior Mayor of Nelson Mandela Bay (2024/25). This role has allowed me to lead youth initiatives across the metro, promote civic engagement, and represent the voices of young people on various public platforms. From this experience, I’ve learned the importance of active listening, collaboration, and remaining grounded in the needs of the community.

Another proud achievement is serving as a Round Square Facilitator (2024), where I had the opportunity to lead discussions on global citizenship and service, and coordinate activities that promote inclusivity, environmental awareness, and student leadership. Through this, I learned that leadership is not just about guiding others, but about creating space for others to grow.

Mentors

My greatest role model and mentor is my mother. She has been a dedicated public representative since 2011 and continues to inspire me every day with her integrity, resilience, and unwavering commitment to serving others.

Growing up, I had the privilege of watching her lead with grace, compassion, and strength in often challenging environments. She has taught me the importance of being a voice for the voiceless, standing firm in one’s values, and always putting the community’s needs first.

Her ability to balance leadership responsibilities with empathy and humility has deeply influenced the way I approach my own roles—as Junior Mayor, Round Square Facilitator, and community volunteer. She has encouraged me to lead not for recognition, but for impact, and to always remain grounded in purpose.

My mother’s journey in public service has shown me what it truly means to be a servant leader.
