For Mandla Magwaza, growing up in Katlehong, Gauteng, meant understanding early on how limited opportunities can shape or stifle young potential. But rather than waiting for doors to open, he built his own. A lifelong problem-solver, Mandla channelled his curiosity and creativity into tech-driven solutions that could transform tourism, sustainability, and community development. At 32, Mandla is an innovation scientist and chief operating officer, integrating strategy, technology and policy to drive sustainable transformation in the tourism and hospitality sectors. One of his flagship initiatives is The Arts Revolution Project, a platform that uses immersive 360-degree video technology to promote underexplored tourism destinations in South Africa. The project, born from the Tourism Technology Grassroots Innovation Incubator Programme, received grant funding, business support and skills training. His reputation in innovation and sustainability earned him a role in shaping G20 policy discussions, where he advocates for digital transformation, data governance and equitable development. Mandla also supports the Afrika Mental Health Initiatives.
