DA wants answers from Smuts Ngonyama

The ANC’s head of the Presidency must explain why he set up meetings between government officials and a fishing company in which his family holds interests, the Democratic Alliance said on Sunday. The Mail & Guardian reported on Friday that Smuts Ngonyama’s intervention broke a deadlock between the two parties over compliance with rules to prevent overfishing.

Ngonyama gets ready to ‘move on with life’

The African National Congress’s (ANC) outgoing head of the Presidency and communications, Smuts Ngonyama, said on Wednesday he would continue doing work for the party, but in a lower profile. ”It’s more or less 10 years that I have been in this role and I accept that I have to move on with life and look at other challenges,” he said.

Ngonyama: Russia deal with ‘ANC arm’ above board

Newspaper reports suggesting something untoward in a deal between Russian companies and the African National Congress-aligned Chancellor House firm are nonsense, the ANC said on Tuesday. ”It is a deal between private companies that has nothing to do with government or the ANC,” said ANC spokesperson Smuts Ngonyama, adding that he did not want to comment on it.

I would sue Sunday Times, says Ngonyama

If he had the money, he would sue the Sunday Times for the story ”ANC chief in R50m get-rich-quick deal”, South Africa’s ruling African National Congress (ANC) head of the Presidency Smuts Ngonyama said on Monday. Speaking on Tim Modise’s show on Cape Talk 567/Radio 702, he said: ”I see they don’t say how many shares were given to me and how many shares were sold … ”

Smuts fishes in troubled waters

Smuts Ngonyama, who heads the Presidency in the African National Congress, intervened with government regulators to smooth the way for Bato Star, a fishing company in which his family — and allegedly he — holds interests. The company was struggling for permission for its newly purchased trawler, the Sandile, to fish in South African waters, and Ngonyama arranged the meeting between Bato Star and government officials.

Smuts to ring up a fortune

The R1-billion joint venture between Econet Wireless and IT giant Altech finalised last month is likely to go down as one of the year’s biggest deals — and a surprise beneficiary stands poised to take a handsome stake. It has emerged that African National Congress spokesperson Smuts Ngonyama is part of a consortium in negotiations to buy between 15% and 20% of the newly formed telecoms giant.
