TWO years after demonstrators were mown down by Ciskei troops in what became known as the Bisho massacre, a decision has yet to be taken on whether to prosecute 69 soldiers allegedly responsible for the killings.
Ciskei attorney general Willem Jurgens said this week nothing had changed since his statement in January, when he announced that a decision on whether to proceed with the charges would wait until a new government was in place.
He was, he said, still waiting.
This Wednesday marked the second anniversary of the massacre at Bishos Independence Stadium, when Ciskei troops opened fire on an ANC-led crowd marching on the homeland capital, killing 28 demonstrators and one Ciskei soldier.
The troops were later indemnified by former homeland ruler Brigadier Oupa Gqozo, but the decree was overthrown in a supreme court challenge soon afterwards, opening the way for the prosecution of the soldiers. — Ecna
