Euro tech programme launches

THE European Union will today launch an information technology programme designed to encourage partnerships between European and South African technology businesses, to draw university expertise into business and to assist small technology businesses. Called Esprit, the programme provides EU money to fund European members participating in joint projects.

The Reserve Bank has just published extensive data about the South African economy on its web site, as part of its arrangement with the International Monetary Fund’s Dissemination Standards Bulletin Board (DSBB) on the publication of national statistics on a regular basis. SA finances and economy

$1-BN FOR TELKOM The part-privatisation of Telkom to SBC Communications and Telekom Malaysia, will result in $1-billion being sold forward for delivery on May 22. The $1-billion will be deposited in Telkom’s private sector bank account to help fund infrastructure growth, while the remaining amount of the sales, of R260 million, will go to the exchequer to retire state debt.

POVERTY FORUM

A THREE day forum on poverty eradication in Southern Africa begins in Windhoek on Tuesday, with over 100 governbment and NGO delegates. The forum will discuss an integrated approach to poverty eradication based on the concept of partnership within societies and between developed and developing countries.
