Charity spectacular time again

WEDNESDAY, 11.00AM:

THE Iwisa Charity Spectacular will kick-off at the FNB Stadium in Soweto, outside Johannesburg on July 19, and the organisers are hoping to raise R1,8-million for charity.

Chairman of the National Soccer League/Iwisa Trust Alistair Wheatley said on Tuesday: “We want to make this the biggest and most spectacular event in the history of the competition.” Last year, the popular event raised R1,6-million for 68 charities nationwide.

The price of the tickets has not yet been determined, but the telephone lines are open for the public to cast their votes on which four League teams should take part in the Spectacular. Votes can be cast by telephone (011) 643-3341, or posted to PO Box 742, Bramley 2018, Gauteng.

ELS STARTS AGAIN WORLD No 1 golfer Ernie Els of South Africa carded a two-under-par 69 in the first round of the 36-hole Family House Invitational at Oakmont, Pennsylvania on Tuesday. Rocco Mediate is leading with 65, and Jay Haas is behind him with 67.

GOLF PRE-QUALIFIER The pre-qualifying golf tournament at Humewood course in Port Elizabeth ended on Tuesday with Keith Horne leading. The tournament was a warm-up for the Vodacom Series event which starts on Wednesday.

FENCING TEAM NAMED THE South African team has been named for the World Fencing Championships to be held in Cape Town from July 13. The competitors are: Claudia Holgate, Kelly Wison, Michelle Jelbert, Lena Reizman, Glenda Pieters, Ruth Stenhouse, Cathy Kaye, Severine Lach, Danier Steenkamp, Barend Erasmus, Dario Torrente, Daryyl Gobey, Michael Wood, Adrian Belengere, Gil Levy, Karl Kauffmann, Louis Viljoen, Jacques Viljoen and Ian Basson.

AUSSIE FOR THE SHARKS AUSTRALIAN rugby player John Welborn has signed up with the Natal Sharks for a season of high-level rugby, after being sidelined in his home country due to neck injuries.

ALASKA RALLY SOUTH AFRICAN racing team Franz Stangl and Stan Illman rolled their Castrol Porsche 911 in the third-last section of the Alaska Rally on Sunday. Neither was injured in the accident, but they dropped from fifth to ninth place in the 15 000km rally, and are now struggling to finish in the top ten. Stangl said: “There’s hardly a straight panel on the car, but it is still running well.” He added that they will concentrate on ending well, but “will not try any heroics over the last two days”.
