Rothmans Cup final goes to replay

MONDAY, 12.15PM:

KAIZER CHIEFS and Mamelodi Sundowns played to a 1-1 draw in the final of the Rothmans Cup at the FNB stadium on Saturday. Both teams had chances but were denied goals by good goalkeeping.

It was Chiefs who immediately put pressure in the first half and were unlucky not to have scored a goal or two. Sundowns goalkeeper John Tlale was called to make brilliant saves from midfielder Doctor Khumalo and striker Marc Batchelor early in the first half. It was the inspirational Khumalo who made numerous scoring chances for his strikers.

In the second half Sundowns seemed to take control, but lost the rhythm to Chiefs, who had a strong midfield marshalled by Khumalo, Thabo Mooki, Thabang Lebese and Robson Muchichwa. Chiefs coach Paul Dolezar introduced Bradley Carnell for Humphrey Mlwane and Carnell changed the face of the game to Chiefs’ advantage. Seven minutes from half time Thabang Lebese headed home a Khumalo corner kick to put Chiefs ahead. They excitment was shortlived as Raphael Chukwu equalised within the minute for “The Brazilians”.

The game will be played again at the same venue on Wednesday after a goalless extra time.
