FRIDAY, 8.00PM:
AN unqualified former secretary of the Mpumalanga legislature confessed last year that he stole more than R500,000 from the legislature’s Trust Bank account, the Ngobeni Commission heard on Friday. The matter was not reported to the police.
Mpumalanga speaker Elias Ginindza testified that the former secretary, Alfred Mahlangu, officially confessed that he stole money from the legislature and that the confession was recorded on tape, African Eye News reports.
Ginindza told the commission that Mahlangu confessed to him about the theft in March last year and that an initial agreement was reached between Mahlangu, deputy speaker Cynthia Maropeng and himself that the matter would be kept secret. It was agreed that the money stolen would be repaid when Mahlangu received his pension.
”I was wrong not to inform the legislature but I must confess that I trusted Mahlangu would pay the money back. Also we had his confession on tape that could be used against him if he ever changed his mind. I asked the deputy speaker to hide the tapes away,” said Ginindza.
