SA UMPIRE IN CHUCKER DEBATE

QUESTIONS over the bowling action of Sri Lankan spinner Muttiah Muralitharan have resurfaced after a leading South African umpire joined in the chorus of doubters. South African official Peter van der Merwe, now in Australia working as a match referee for the tri-series, limited-overs tournament between Australia, England and Sri Lanka, said he will be submitting a report to the International Cricket Council asking them to review the suspicious action. ”It is certainly not the standard action,” the Herald-Sun newspaper quoted him on Friday as saying. Van der Merwe continued: ”It is a very distasteful thing to brand someone a chucker. But it is much better to try to rescue them than make a scapegoat of them.”
