THE Labor Party has approached the World Court in The Hague to intervene on its behalf and that of other parties that do not have enough money to pay the required deposits to contest the elections. LP leader Martin Nel on Wednesday said the party decided on this action after being denied direct access to the Constitutional Court on Monday for its challenge to the Independent Electoral Commission’s deposit regulations. Another party, the People’s Liberation Party, has already lodged an application in the Pretoria High Court to declare the deposit requirements invalid. In his letter to the President of the World Court, Nel said it is unfair that large political parties with representation in parliament should receive state funding, while new parties are denied this.
