Trinidad whip SA 2-0

OWN CORRESPONDENT, Port of Spain | Friday 1.45pm

BAFANA BAFANA captain Doctor Khumalo missed a 71st minute penalty which was saved by Trinidad and Tobago goalkeeper Ince in a match that saw the Caribbean nation whip South Africa 2-0 on Thursday night.

American-based Trinidad strikers Mickey Trotmann and Stern John scored a goal each in the friendly international.

Trotmann, who plays in the MLS with Miami Fusion, converted a close-range header in the 27th minute as the home team caught South Africa on the counter-attack. John, from Columbus Crew, scored in almost similar circumstances seven minutes into the second half as a quick attack left the visitors’ defence square. Both countries fielded weakened teams in a hastily arranged match to boost South Africa’s bid to host the 2006 World Cup finals.

Trinidad is the home of CONCACAF president Jack Warner, who told South African officials before the game that Africa would need to have just one World Cup candidate if it stood any chance of winning the right to host the event ahead of Brazil, England and Germany.
