TENDULKAR RETURNS TO WORLD CUP

SACHIN TENDULKAR, grieving over the death of his father, will rejoin the Indian team in time for their World Cup match against Sri Lanka on May 26, team officials confirmed here on Thursday. Manager Brijesh Patel said he was informed of Tendulkar’s return by the Board of Control for Cricket in India. Tendulkar, the key to the team’s batting and regarded as the best batsman in the world, flew back to India for his father Ramesh’s cremation on Thursday. The Indian team, shorn of their best player, crashed to a shock three-run defeat against Zimbabwe on Wednesday. Tendulkar will also miss the match against rank outsiders Kenya on Sunday in Bristol. India, who won the World Cup in 1983, have to win all their remaining three games in group A to have any chance of reaching the second round of the tournament.
