DAVID SHAPSHAK, Johannesburg | Tuesday 12.15pm.
THE South African Rugby Football Union top brass will meet on Friday to discuss rugby and the sports body’s transformation and policies for Springbok and provincial selection after last week’s race selection row.
Sarfu CEO Rian Oberholzer on Tuesday called the meeting with his management committee after the union’s president, Silas Nkanunu, returned home from Sydney where he was watching the centenary match between Australia and England.
Last week, Mallett was forced to apologise after he reportedly lashed at criticism of his team selections, saying he would not be pushed in his selection choices, or “ever take part in anything that can be construed as window-dressing”.
“The issues that have arisen over the past week have to be discussed and resolved by the management committee and the executive committee, not only by the president and the CEO of Sarfu,” Oberholzer said.
“There has been a lot of speculation over the past week regarding the introduction of quotas in the national team. This needs to be discussed in detail and clarified.”
The management committee will put proposals to the full executive committee, which meets in Pretoria on August 6, for consideration and implementation.
Oberholzer is meeting with Mallett on Tuesday to continue discussions on the extension of his contract. Mallett’s final contract has also to be ratified by the management committee.
Meanwhile, Sarfu will also meet with the new Minister of Sport, Mr Ngconde Balfour, in Pretoria on Friday to “discuss numerous matters relating to rugby”.
