GOVT REVIEWS ITS OWN TRANSPORT

MINISTER of Transport Dullah Omar has announced that the supply of vehicles to political office bearers is currently under review for several reasons. These include plans to streamline the fleet from 552 down to 200 vehicles, cutting costs from R25,3-million to R10,4-million per annum. Control of vehicles by the government garage has led to fraud and theft. Currently, ministers are allocated two cars each, one for Pretoria, government’s administrative centre, and one for Cape Town, the legislative centre. A tender for purchasing new vehicles over two years was announced on May 7 1999. The tender for the purchase of the vehicles was called for on 7 May 1999 and closed on 28 May 1999.
