Anglogold and NUM reach wage agreement

OWN CORRESPONDENT, Johannesburg | Monday 4.00pm

ANGLOGOLD, the world’s biggest gold producer, and the National Union of Mineworkers have reached agreement on a two-year wage deal, Anglogold said on Monday.

Company spokesman James Duncan said that under the deal, lowest paid workers will receive a 10% wage increase this year and next year, while workers in other five categories will receive a 9% increase.

Duncan said agreement was also reached on matters such as paternity leave, work-related injuries and the employment of sub-contractors.

The two parties also agreed on the formulation and provision of funding for policies and programmes on sexually-transmitted diseases, including HIV and AIDS. The two parties also agreed on regulation of sub-contractors to ensure they are monitored against minimum conditions of employment legislation, and that their employees are adequately covered against unemployment and work-related injury and illness.

They were still awaiting the outcome of an application for exemption for two years from various provisions of the Basic Conditions of Employment Act. One of the areas affected by this would be their lunch breaks.

The agreements apply to workers at all AngloGold mines. — AFP
