CAMPBELL AND FLOWER ANCHOR ZIM

LEFT-HANDERS Alistair Campbell and Andy Flower anchored Zimbabwe Thursday to a reasonable total of 244 for nine in their 50 overs against West Indies in the inaugural Singapore International Challenge tournament. Opting to bat first, Zimbabwe suffered an early setback when World Cup hero Neil Johnson was dismissed by Mervyn Dillon in the second over. The other opener Grant Flower too did not last long as Hendy Bryan had him caught at backward point by skipper Brian Lara. And when Murray Goodwin was caught by Ricardo Powell fending off a short rising delivery from Reon King, Zimbabwe looked in deep trouble. But Campbell played a captain’s knock of 80 off 104 balls, striking six fours and three huge sixes off leg-spinner Nehemiah Perry in a 114-run 4th wicket stand. The dismissal of Campbell, caught behind by Jacobs off King, put the brakes on their free-scoring. Flower tried his best to keep the scoreboard rotating and had a good 71-run stand with Stuart Carlisle for the sixth wicket. Flower hit 89 off 99 balls before being clean bowled by Dillon.
