DISGRUNTLED REPORTERS MOB GAMES ORGANISER

SECURITY guards came to the rescue of All Africa Games marketing manager Dumile Mateza after he was pushed and shoved by a group of disgruntled reporters at the Games’ main media centre at Nasrec on Thursday. The journalists were being handed gift packs when Mateza told his staff they were issuing the reporters packs intended for volunteers. Matters became strained when the officials attempted to reclaim the gift packs, and when Mateza told the journalists “not to be silly” they took offence and shouted angrily at him. Security guards arrived after the manager was shoved by the reporters. The guards dispersed the reporters, who then negotiated with officials over the distribution of the gift packs. The incident brought to a head tension which has simmered since the start of the Games over gifts for the media. Some reporters accused officials of prejudice because they had not yet received their freebies, while others ambushed press conferences to complain at length about the situation.
