SPENCER OUT WITH KNEE INJURY

NEW Zealand utility back Carlos Spencer is to return home from the World Cup after suffering a shattering knee injury. Spencer will fly back home later this week after colliding with flanker Dylan Mika during a training session on Monday. A scan revealed ligament damage that coach John Hart said was serious. The All Black selectors have not yet made a decision on whether they need a replacement. They already have two flyhalfs in their squad in Andrew Mehrtens and Tony Brown. The injury has come at a bad time for the All Blacks, following news tighthead prop Kees Meeuws could be ruled out of the rest of the tournament with a calf muscle injury. Coach John Hart says Spencer’s injury was a major blow. “It is a similar injury to the one that Australian Stephen Larkham suffered,” said Hart. “He could be out for up to six months.” New Zealand’s next match is their Group B contest against England at Twickenham on Saturday.
