ZIM GOVT POSTPONES ELECTIONS

THE Zimbabwean government has postponed general elections until at least June next year from the initial date slated for March, a cabinet minister said on Wednesday. Justice, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Emmerson Mnangagwa, told state radio that the general elections will not be held before June next year. “Our desire would have been to have elections in March… but the law allows us to extend for a further four months or so,” Mnangagwa said. The government is keen to hold next year’s polls under a new constitution which is currently in draft form and is due to go a referendum next month to offer Zimbabweans the choice to accept or reject the new basic law.
