NO MEDICAL IN AKINWANDE FIGHT

THERE was no pre-fight medical done before World Boxing Association number one contender Henry Akinwande’s mismatched fight in Cape Town last Tuesday. While the medical is required by law, the Western Cape Boxing Commission claimed they only found out a day before. The bout which ended in the first round was in itself a disgraceful mismatch which could easily have turned very ugly. Akinwande is a veteran of 39 bouts and has been in the ring with the likes of Universal Heavyweight world champion Lennox Lewis, while his opponent, Kenyan Chris Serengo, is yet to win a bout after eight contests. “According to my information,” says Bert Blewett, editor of Boxing World magazine, “Literally every rule and regulation was broken putting this tournament together. In a high-risk sport like professional boxing, that is unacceptable.”
