MURRAY Goodwin and his captain Andy Flower steered Zimbabwe out of early trouble on the first day of the second Test against West Indies on Friday.
Goodwin reached 65 not out and Flower 23 not out as Zimbabwe recovered from a lunch score of 40 for three to 119 without further mishaps by tea.
West Indies used six bowlers in the second session in an attempt to prise them apart. The attack included part-time spinners Chris Gayle and captain Jimmy Adams.
Paceman Reon King did the early damage with two wickets, while Courtney Walsh edged closer to Kapil Dev’s world record 434 wickets by dismissing Grant Flower.
Walsh took his Test tally to 431, equal second with Sir Richard Hadlee.
Goodwin and Flower, naturally cautious at first, produced some attractive stroke-play as the bright afternoon sunshine gradually dried out the moisture in the Sabina Park pitch.
The 50 partnership came up in 111 minutes then Goodwin reached his half-century with an on-drive for four off Franklyn Rose.
Goodwin made 50 in 193 minutes off 135 balls with six fours. — Reuters
