STRAEULI NAMED SHARKS COACH

RUDOLF Straeuli, a member of South Africa’s 1995 World Cup winning squad, was named on Wednesday as the new coach of the Natal Sharks. Straeuli replaces Hugh Reece-Edwards who was sacked after the Sharks finished bottom of the Super 12 standings this year. The Sharks reached the semifinals of the competition in three of its first four years. The former Springbok eighthman leaves his job as coach of Border to take up the post. His contract runs until the end of the 2001 season. Straeuli played ten Tests for the Springboks between 1994 and the 1995 World Cup before he moved to the UK as player/coach at Bedford. Straeuli was highly successful in the UK, seeing Bedford promoted to the first-division where they competed until the South African’s departure at the end of last year.
