PERMISSION TO MARRY GRANTED

KENYAN women soldiers will be allowed to marry following sweeping new changes introduced by the country’s Defence Council aimed at restructuring the armed services. Female soldiers will be free to marry either civilians or soldiers, following the integration of the former Women Service Corp into other sectors of the armed forces. However, there are limitations: the senior spouse will not be allowed to patronise the junior partner’s mess unless there is a celebration at the mess and senior officers are invited. Other reforms include pegging future promotions to academic performance. Officers will now be required to undergo university level education to be considered for promotion. Promotions above the level of lieutenant colonel are to remain politically based on the pleasure of the President and will not be affected by the reforms.
