THE Johannesburg High Court has sentenced four ringleaders of South Africa’s “taxi wars” to a total of 16 life sentences and 175 years’ imprisonment on murder and attempted murder charges. Vusi Dlada, 28, Sindane Villie, 44, Phillip Mokgabudi, 40, and Nicolas Motha, 40, all executive members of the Witwatersrand Taxi Association, were involved in a spate of taxi violence in the Johannesburg township of Soweto in 1998.
