Top cop charged with murder

Paul Kirk

A top detective from the Durban murder and robbery unit is being investigated on at least six counts of murder and attempted murder.

This emerged after Detective Inspector Robin Singh appeared briefly in the Durban Magistrate’s Court last week on a murder charge. It is suspected the murder may be related to a drug deal gone wrong.

Singh was arrested by the Independent Complaints Directorate (ICD) after the body of a murdered man was found with Singh’s handcuffs binding his wrists.

According to the investigation docket held by the ICD, Singh is alleged to have abducted the as yet unidentified man and, after taking him to a deserted part of Isipingo, shooting him several times at close range.

The handcuffs were engraved with Singh’s name and telephone number.

The ICD regional director, Advocate Styx Madlala, said Singh had been arrested “through information that we received”.

He declined to specify the evidence against Singh, saying it was ICD policy only to reveal this in court.

Madlala confirmed that, after an initial search of Singh’s home, a charge of possession of Mandrax was also laid against him. It is suspected Singh stole the narcotics from the murdered man.

Singh was released on R4 000 bail and will appear in court again on June 7. The commander of the Durban murder and robbery unit, Daan Malan, has confirmed Singh will be suspended from work.

Zeblon Sibisi, the ICD officer in charge of the investigation, said his office had taken over six additional dockets relating to Singh and intends to reopen the investigations. It is suspected Singh may have intimidated witnesses into not testifying against him.

The dockets relate to murders, attempted murders and robberies.
