EGYPT JAILS 14 ON PROSELYTISM CHARGES

EGYPT’S state security court on Tuesday ordered 14 Egyptians to be held in preventive detention for two weeks, on suspicion of proselytism and violating the principles of Islam, court sources said. The suspects were rounded up at a meeting in a Cairo suburb. Tapes used to spread the group’s ideology were seized and handed to Al-Azhar, the highest institution in Sunni Islam, the sources added, without giving further details on their activities. Among the group of 14 arrested Monday on charges they had “negated the principles of Islam” was 51-year-old civil servant Amin Yussef. The detainees are all Muslims aged between 30 and 51. – AFP
