A POLICE inspector was recovering in the Groote Schuur Hospital after being shot in a hijacking on Sunday, Western Cape police said on Monday. Colin Barendse (34) was shot in the right arm and chest. Barendse, who is stationed in Khayelitsha, was on his way to pick up colleagues for work, when four men stopped him in Mfuleni at about 5.15pm. The men started arguing and Barendse, who was in a police vehicle, was shot. The policeman managed to jump out the car and the four men drove off in his vehicle. In Khayelitsha, the alleged robbers knocked over a pedestrian who died and then collided with a Toyota bakkie. The car came to a standstill and three of the men ran away. The fourth one was shot in the chest by an unidentified member of the community. He is reported to be in a serious condition in the Tygerberg Hospital. – Sapa
