Ratanga Junction blast injures 51

At least 51 people sustained serious and minor burn wounds during a gas explosion at Ratanga Junction theme park in Cape Town on Wednesday, Western Cape police reported.

Inspector Daphne Dell said a chef noticed a gas leak in one of the kitchens at the facility in Milnerton at about 10.30am and switched on a fan. Moments later an explosion occurred while the chef was teaching a group of casual workers how to prepare food.

The injured were treated by emergency personnel at the scene before they were rushed to various hospitals. No foul play was suspected at the moment and representatives from disaster management were dispatched at the scene.

Dell said there was no major damage to the property except for black burn marks in the area where the explosion occurred.

There were no members of the public at the time of the incident, she said.
