South African cricket captain Graeme Smith was fined 30% of his match fee on Tuesday after South Africa failed to get through their required overs in the first Test against the West Indies at the Wanderers.
Match referee Ranjan Madugalle also fined the South African team 15% of their match fee for the same offence.
Both fines paled somewhat when compared with that of Andre Nel, who pleaded guilty to making an obscene gesture to Chris Gayle and was fined 50% of his match fee.
At least South Africa can take solace from securing a comprehensive 189-run Test victory.
The Windies, although fined not as severely, have an uphill struggle ahead if they are to draw level in the four match series.
Skipper Brian Lara was fined 10% of his match fee and the West Indies side 5%, also for a slow over rate.
Both sides suffered when it came to getting their overs bowled on time by not using a spinner effectively.
While the Windies lost off-spinner Chris Gayle on the first day after suffering a hamstring strain, South Africa’s spinner Robin Peterson was simply blasted out of the attack.
Peterson only bowled 21 overs in two innings, probably because he was proving far too expensive.
The unfortunate Peterson was smashed for the most runs conceded to date in a Test over when Lara blasted 28 runs on Sunday afternoon. — Sapa
