Comedian Marc Lottering admitted at the scene of a car crash in Sea Point, Cape Town, that he had had ”too much to drink”, a Cape Town magistrate heard on Monday.
Prosecutor Vincent Mntambo said Lottering (36), who made his first court appearance on Monday, admitted guilt at the accident scene on Thursday last week. He was arrested then for alleged drunken driving and reckless or negligent driving.
Charges were not put to Lottering and he was not asked to plead.
Defence attorney Madney Arnold told the court he would represent Lottering free of charge.
Lottering, who was released by the police on R500 bail the night of his arrest, appeared before magistrate Bulelwa Mabuza, who extended his bail and warned him to appear in court again on February 27.
Mntambo said three cars were involved in the collision, and that Arnold had already discussed the case with senior prosecutor David Jacobs.
Arnold confirmed this and said Jacobs had in turn discussed the case with the Western Cape directorate for public prosecutions (DPP). The directorate would ”oversee” the case, Arnold told the court.
Arnold said he had not yet decided whether to also pursue the case with the DPP himself. He did not indicate why he wanted to discuss the case with the DPP.
The prosecutor said statements still had to be obtained from the drivers of the other cars involved in the collision.
When Lottering admitted at the accident scene that he had had too much to drink, he also told police at the scene that this was the cause of the collision, the prosecutor said. — Sapa
