South African cricket captain Graeme Smith conceded on Saturday that his relationship with Lance Klusener was not ”rosy” but insisted that it was improving. Following South Africa’s sorry showing in the World Cup last summer, the pair indulged in a public spat, with Smith labelling Klusener ”disruptive”.
After being dropped from the national side following that first round exit, Klusener was drafted into the 14-man one day squad on Tuesday for the five match series against the West Indies, beginning at Newlands on Sunday.
”Lance and I have come a long way in the last two or three months,” said Smith after nets at the ground. ”To say everything is rosy though is wrong, but we are talking and I really do think things are getting better.”
Before Klusener was named in the squad, Smith was informed of the fact by the selectors — a decision he apparently accepted with equanimity. ”I had absolutely no problem with him being included,” responded Smith.
”If he’s the best man for the job, so be it. Lance wants extra responsibility with the ball and as a captain I really like that. I’m happy to have Lance here and hope he performs well.”
After the team was initially announced on Tuesday, Smith did sound a warning though — ”one man is not bigger than the team”. In that regard, Smith does detect a new attitude in South Africa’s most explosive batsman.
”Lance is not particularly emotional but I think he is a lot more energetic. There is a new culture in this side and I think he wants to fit in.”
Smith added that he would have a separate ”chat” with Klusener before the team meeting that takes place the night before the game. ”Up until now it’s all been about cricket. Tonight we’ll discuss some other issues.” – Sapa
