Real Madrid lose Ronaldo

Real Madrid lost big in its 1-1 draw, and AC Milan and Werder Bremen maintained their leads on Sunday.

In England, defending FA Cup champion Arsenal and rival Manchester United both advanced to the tournament’s semifinals.

Madrid, who only managed to take home one point from their draw at Racing Santander in the Spanish league, lost Ronaldo for at least two weeks with a tear in his left thigh muscle.

The injury will force the league’s top scorer with 22 goals to miss Wednesday’s crucial Champions League second leg match against Bayern Munich.

The two teams, with a combined 13 Champions Cup title, drew 1-1 in the first leg in Munich.

On Saturday, Ronaldo left the field in the 74th minute after tearing his left thigh muscle. Yossi Benayoun scored for Racing after Santiago Solari had given Madrid the lead.

Milan got goals from Andrea Pirlo, Filippo Inzaghi and Kaka to help beat Sampdoria 3-1. The defending European champions have lost just one match through 24 rounds.

Ivan Klasnic and Angelos Charisteas scored a goal each as Werder Bremen easily beat 1860 Munich 2-0 in the Bundesliga.

Charisteas came on a substitute for Brazilian forward Ailton, who later flew to Qatar to change citizenship in exchange for a big bonus. Ailton leads the league with 20 goals through 23 matches.

In the FA Cup, Arsenal demolished Portsmouth 5-1 as Thierry Henry and Fredrik Ljungberg each scored twice. Kolo Toure also scored for the Gunners, while Teddy Sheringham got one back for Pompey.

Manchester United will be making their 23rd semifinal appearance in the competition after edging Fulham 2-1. Ruud van Nistelrooy scored both for the defending league champions and Steed Malbranque converted from the penalty spot for Fulham.

Spain

FC Barcelona were the big winner in the Spanish league, nipping Mallorca 3-2 to stretch their winning streak to seven games and close to within one point on third-place Deportivo la Coruna.

Valencia stayed in second after blanking Deportivo 3-0. Vicente Roriguez netted twice and Juan Sanchez got the third.

AC Milan lead with 61 points, five more than Roma and six more than Juventus. Lazio, with a game in hand, and Parma are next with 40 points each.

Germany

Roy Makaay headed in a pair of goals as Bayern Munich beat Leverkusen 3-1 to keep the pressure on Werder Bremen.

England

Sunderland reached their first FA Cup semifinal in 12 years after topping Sheffield United 1-0, joining Arsenal and Manchester United in the last four. Tommy Smith scored the lone goal.

The fourth team is still undecided because Tranmere held Millwall to a 0-0 draw as goalkeeper John Achterberg saved a penalty from Millwall’s Australian international Kevin Muscat.

The semifinal draw is on Monday.

The Netherlands

Ajax maintained their lead in the Dutch league, but barely.

The Amsterdam powerhouse squeaked by RKC Waalwijk 1-0 after an own-goal from Steve Olfers.

Title rival PSV Eindhoven hammered FC Utrecht 4-0 to keep the race alive.

Mateja Kezman netted his 17th goal of the season for PSV, and Wilfred Bouma, Mark van Bommel and Park Ji-sung also struck.

Ajax lead with 58 points, followed by PSV with 52 and AZ Alkmaar, who nipped ADO The Hague 3-2, with 45 points.

Scotland

Runaway Scottish Premier League leader Celtic dropped another blow on archrival Rangers in the Scottish Cup quarterfinals, winning 1-0.

Henrik Larsson scored the winner against Rangers, who won the domestic treble last season but look almost certain to finish with nothing this time.

In the league, Celtic leads second-place Rangers by 16 points with 76.

In other quarterfinal matches, division one Inverness upset Premier League Motherwell 1-0, Dunfermline blanked Partick Thistle 3-0 and Aberdeen and Livingston drew 1-1.
