Young surfer critical but stable after shark attack

A 16-year-old surfer was in a critical but stable condition in the Constantiaberg Medi-Clinic on Monday after he was attacked by a shark off Muizenberg Beach, a spokesperson for the clinic said on Monday.

On Monday evening the boy, identified by SABC News as John Paul Andrew, underwent surgery and his condition was critical but stable.

According to NSRI spokesperson Ian Klopper Andrew had been surfing with a group of friends when he was bitten by a Great White shark just before 2pm.

”His board was broken in half and his right leg was amputated,” Klopper said.

Andrew’s friends helped him to shore and lifesavers carried out CPR. Paramedics then took him to the Constantiaberg Medi-Clinic.

”The conditions were exactly the same as those at Noordhoek during the last attack there… glassy, small waves. Lifesavers were warning surfers about the shark, which was spotted yesterday [Sunday] afternoon. It is about five or five-and-a-half metres long.”

Klopper said the scene at the beach was one of shock and dismay. – Sapa
