Kaizer Chiefs strengthened their grip on top of the Castle Premiership League log with a 1-0 win over Dynamos in Giyani on Monday.
AmaKhosi’s myriad supporters had to wait for the full first half to celebrate. Jabulani Mendu scored the all-important goal in the 43rd minute and the adoring capacity crowd went into a frenzy.
Chiefs have now amassed 54 points from 23 matches. They are four points clear of their competitors, Ajax Cape Town, who have played a game more than the log leaders.
Chiefs showed character and zeal in the opening minutes, especially with Thabo Mooki and Mendu’s attempts in the fifth and 10th minutes respectively, but Dynamos goalkeeper Duncan Mkhonjwa was uncompromising.
However, Dynamos, the hosts, held their own and in the process produced some flashes of class.
They came close through Gerald Raphahlela but Chiefs sticksman Brian Baloyi was equal to the task denying Raphahlela from a brilliant header in the 15th minute.
Joel Seroba, who had a great match for Dynamos, was unlucky not to score when his powerful shot was saved by Baloyi in the 27th minute.
Both sides were evenly matched and gave as much as they received until the 43rd minute when Mendu converted a Kabamba Musasa through pass that Mendu blasted home from close range.
Seroba was back in the picture in the second stanza but his shot was blocked by Baloyi in the 51st minute.
Dynamos continued to exert pressure on their visitors. Simphiwe Mbambo came close twice but both his shots in the 54th and 60th minutes were saved by Baloyi. — Sapa
