‘Please, Schumi, show some mercy’

The German media have pleaded with six-time formula one champion Michael Schumacher to show some mercy towards his helpless competitors after cantering to his fifth win in Sunday’s Spanish Grand Prix in Barcelona.

Ferrari driver Schumacher (35) opened up an 18-point lead over Brazilian teammate Rubens Barichello with this victory and equalled 1992 Formula One champion Nigel Mansell’s record of five consecutive wins.

”Please, Schumi, show some mercy,” implored German daily Bild.

”You could at least make it a little bit more exciting. The only excitement was the start.”

Schumacher admitted afterwards that he feared an exhaust problem would force him to retire but that angst evaporated as he received the chequered flag once again.

”He is in his own formula one league,” lauded Bild. ”He was driving with an exhaust problem from lap 11 onwards and still outran everyone.”

”Thanks for giving the opposition a glimmer of hope,” said Berliner Morgenpost somewhat tongue-in-cheek. — Sapa-AFP
