The first snow of the season has fallen on the peaks surrounding Barkly East in the Eastern Cape, almost three months later than last year, the South African Weather Service said on Tuesday.
As a result, very cold conditions were expected over the western, southern and south-eastern interior as well as the eastern high ground and Highveld.
More snowfalls were also expected on the high ground of the Eastern Cape and Lesotho towards the end of the week.
Forecaster Lee-Anne Clark said a light dusting of snow had fallen in the early hours of Tuesday morning.
”The immediate reason [for the snow] was because the various weather systems required for snow had not come together. This nice cold system was the fist one of the season where all the elements came nicely together,” she said.
Clark said the next ”good one” is already on its way and should make landfall over Cape Town just in time for the start of the weekend.
”We are expecting more snow and rain for the Cape,” she said. — Sapa
