Huge car bomb explodes in Kandahar

A powerful car bomb exploded on Friday on a busy road on the outskirts of Kandahar in Afghanistan as a convoy of United States military vehicles was passing, raining debris over a wide area and damaging several cars, police officials said.

There was no immediate word on casualties, said General Salim Khan, the deputy police chief for Kandahar province. Witnesses said they thought several people were injured, perhaps seriously, although it was not clear if they were passers-by or American soldiers.

US and Afghan security officials cordoned off the area, warning journalists not to take pictures or ask questions. But the charred remains of one car — presumably the one carrying the bomb — could be seen.

Kandahar is the main city in southern Afghanistan, and home to a large US base. It has been the site of frequent attacks, usually against convoys making their way on dusty roads. – Sapa-AP
